JOB OPENINGS FOR PETROLEUM INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS
STRONG
Employment needs for engineering and scientist
professionals in the New Mexico oil and gas industry are
at very high levels as exploration and drilling activity
continues to expand in the state. The current boom,
related to high prices for both oil and natural gas, has
led to significantly increased hiring of petroleum
engineers, geoscientists and other professional
positions according to industry employers, recruiters
and association officers. Fueling the demand for these
engineering and scientific experts is the increase in
domestic exploration and production and the use of
advanced technologies such as horizontal drilling
Employment in the New Mexico oil and gas industry
overall has increased by over 20% in the last three
years. However there is a lack of qualified professional
workers to meet the demand due to the very cyclical
nature of the industry and attractiveness of information
technology and other competing high technology careers.
Some industry observers expect the employment need to
stay strong for the next three to five years.
